Sri Vellaiyappan hit the headlines last week when he spearheaded the opposition to the take over of the historic Jalakanteswara (Shiva) Temple by the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowment Board of the State Government. The temple, had been without a deity for four centuries because of Islamic invasions. The deity, a Shiva Linga, was installed in 1981. Thanks to the concerted efforts of Hindus led by Hindu Munnani. The Shivalinga was installed with huge support. Since then, for the last 35 years, the temple properties hugely increased, courtesy, thousands of devout Hindus. All on a sudden, the State Government wants to be the administrator of the temple, so far managed by a local committee consisting of eminent persons from the Hindu society.
